JCU students, faculty, and staff mingle during the traditional dinner held the night before Thanksgiving

Marking the 16th anniversary of Thanksgiving theater events at JCU, on November 24th the University Drama Club presented Into the Woods, a musical by award-winning composer Stephen Sondheim. Under the expert direction of JCU alumna Giulia Argentieri, the talented cast of 18 was made up of visiting as well as degree-seeking students.

In keeping with JCU tradition, the show was preceded by a delicious American-style Thanksgiving spread, complete with turkey, stuffing, roasted potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

Into the Woods intertwines the plots of many well known fairy tales and follows them further to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). It is at the same time an irreverent fantasy and a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
