JCU Professor Silvia Scarpa’s article entitled “Assessing the Effects on Students’ Awareness and Action Produced by the Course ‘Human Trafficking and Contemporary Slavery’” was published in the Fall 2012 Issue of The Protection Project Journal of Human Rights and Civil Society.

The Protection Project is a research institute based at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (Washington, DC).

Professor Scarpa’s article contains the results of research aimed at understanding whether introducing the course PL325 “Human Trafficking and Contemporary Slavery” into the academic curriculum of John Cabot University (JCU) affected student awareness and action in the field of human-trafficking and contemporary slavery.

For this purpose, Professor Scarpa, who is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Political Science, conducted a survey and examined the opinions of 47 students who attended the course in the past and agreed to fill out a questionnaire. The results of the study shed light upon the role academic institutions can play in the fight against human trafficking and contemporary slavery, a phenomenon that has attracted very little research to this day.
