Students Lend Talent to Alberese Archaeological Field School

Real-world challenges are not unfamiliar to the students of Professor Sabrina Schmidt’s Graphic Design course (AS 101). They have recently applied their design skills to creating promotional material for the Alberese Archaeological Field School, organized in association with John Cabot University and the University of Sheffield.

The challenge was to create material that provided details for the archaeological project as well as conveying the sense of discovery and passion of participating in the field school. It had to be visually striking and unusual in format, and – in order to highlight the academic aspect of the excavations – the choice fell on bookmarks.

“We are very happy and impressed with the results,” says Professor Inge Hansen, who co-directs the field school. “The students approached the design challenge with resourcefulness and creativity, and showed a remarkable engagement with the message we are trying to convey of our archaeological work. It was a delightful, if difficult, challenge to choose between them.”

Congratulations to Mackenzie Jones and Alessandro Laberinto whose designs were the works chosen.

The collaboration between the Field School and Professor Schmidt’s Graphic Design course students will continue in the spring. Learn about the archaeological field school in Tuscany that will take place in August 2013!
