"Italy Reads" Volunteers Gear Up for Fall 2013 With Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Namesake"
With the support of the
Embassy of the
United States of America in Italy
Only a week into the Fall semester and 39 JCU students have already volunteered to take on the exciting challenge of , and the numbers are increasing every day!
is John Cabot University’s community-based reading and cultural exchange program that began in 2009 with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for The Big Read Rome.
This year, we are reading Pulitzer Prize-winner Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake, a novel that includes among its themes issues of cultural and individual identity, immigration and life choices.
Volunteers are busy preparing to engage in a variety of exchange activities with Italian and international high school students of the 70 currently participating English teachers from 40 schools in Rome, Naples, Anzio, Pomezia and Rignano Flaminio. Italy Reads activities include: in-class exchange discussions, JCU student-led workshops, lectures, cinema and discussion sessions, exchange visits at the JCU campus and theatrical performances offered by The English Theatre of Rome.
Now in its 5th year, the JCU fully-funded Italy Reads program has recently received financial support from The Embassy of the United States of America in Italy in recognition of the breadth of this program and its effectiveness in bringing cultures together by promoting dialogue between students from around the globe through the study of literature.
This enthusiastic group of students, which includes both JCU degree-seekers and study abroad students, will begin scheduled exchange visits with Italian high school students of English starting the end of September.
