JCU senior Giacomo Sproccati recently took the advice of Professor Tom Govero and joined Toastmasters, an international organization aimed at developing speaking and leadership skills.

At the first meeting he attended, Giacomo competed in an impromptu speech contest and was judged best speaker, together with another club member with many years of work experience. He was asked to give a two-minute speech on how he would organize a Toastmasters conference in Rome.

Giacomo has been involved in the Model United Nations at JCU since April 2009 and is considering graduate school in the United States after he graduates in Fall 2014 with a double degree from JCU and the University of Milan.

Giacomo said that his time at John Cabot University has helped him become a confident public speaker. “I have had lots of great opportunities at JCU. The biggest benefits for me have been the clubs, being a student worker at Orientation, and the fact that there is so much diversity in one place.”

His favorite courses at JCU include Public Speaking with Professor Govero, Italian Cinema with Professor Capoferri, Digital Media Culture with Professor Lopez, Media, Culture and Society with Professor Sarram, and Political Communication with Professor Coretti.

He recommends Toastmasters Rome to Communications and Business students, as it provides the opportunity to practice public speaking, work as a group, and network with people from diverse backgrounds.
