On October 31 through November 9, 2014, JCU Professor Jens Koehler attended an international congress on water in antiquity in Antalya, Turkey.

The international conference entitled “The Legacy of Sextus Julius Frontinus, International Congress on the History of Water Management and Hydraulic Engineering in the Mediterranean Region” sought to promote further research on ancient water buildings. Over 50 scholars, archaeologists and water engineers came together from all over the world to discuss particular questions of water engineering.

In addition to being the chair of a discussion on water engineering, Prof. Koehler also presented his paper entitled “Death in the Bath. From Therapeutic Hazard to a Reconstruction of Ancient Roman Bathing,” in which he discussed ancient Roman spas, their medical aspects, as well as their repercussions on the buildings’ architectural layout.

Prof. Koehler plans to apply his newly acquired knowledge and experience into teaching courses on ancient Roman civilization at JCU.
