JCU Classics professor Massimo Betello will present the results of the first three years of excavation at the site of the ancient Roman colony of Grumentum (Basilicata) at the annual meeting of the Archeological Institute of America in Toronto, Canada, from January 5 to 8, 2017.

The “British Archaeological Project at Grumentum,” directed by Professor Betello and Professor Taylor Lauritsen, studies a production and retail district of the city of Grumentum, and acts as a field school for students of archaeology at the University of Cardiff (UK).

The small budget and the physical distance between the researchers have acted as powerful incentives in finding an optimal balance between digital data collection (expensive but easily sharable) and paper documentation (inexpensive but unsuitable for on-line contribution).

Professors Betello and Lauritsen are two Roman archaeologists whose main research focuses on the ancient sites of Pompeii and Grumentum.

The project is funded by Cardiff University (UK) and John Cabot University (Italy). More information can be found at the website http://www.bapg.co.uk/
