Professor Silvia Scarpa Speaks at CARFMS 2012 Conference in Toronto

On May 16-18th, JCU Professor of Political Science Silvia Scarpa attended the “Restructuring Refuge and Settlement: Responding to the Global Dynamics of Displacement” Conference, organized by The Canadian Association for Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (CARFMS) and hosted by the Centre for Refugee Studies, Osgoode Hall Law School York University, Toronto, Canada.

Professor Scarpa presented a paper entitled: “Unsuccessful Asylum Seekers Who Have Formed a Family in the Host Country: Do they Have a Right to Stay?” in which she analyzed and compared the recent views and jurisprudence of the United Nations Human Rights Committee and the European Court of Human Rights on this issue.

Professor Scarpa was generously granted funds covering travelling and lodging expenses by the JCU Faculty Development Committee and CARFMS.

Professor Scarpa will be teaching the Course “Human Trafficking and Contemporary Slavery” at JCU in the Fall 2012 Semester.
