JCU Students Venture Out of the Box for TEDx Roma Logo Contest
The JCU Institute for Entrepreneurship and Graphic Design Professor Sabrina Schmidt have conceived a service learning module that allows students to apply their classroom education in a real-world exercise, designing logos, brochures and other branded materials for a real client. Professor Schmidt guides her students in the process; the students present to the client, who selects the project that best fits their needs.
Professor Schmidt, a lecturer in Studio Art at JCU and Managing Director of Nuvolario, brings forth an extensive experience with creative design projects on a global scale, in corporate identity, traditional and digital branding. This Fall, her students in Introduction to Graphic Design have taken on the challenge of TEDx Roma as a client. TEDx Roma is an independently organized event that operates under license from TED Conferences, a website where riveting lectures by remarkable individuals from around the world are viewable for free streaming.
At the top-notch studio art facilities of Largo dei Fiorentini, students designed original and versatile concepts to capture the theme of thinking Out of the Box; aligned with the motif of TED Conferences, ideas worth spreading, and the color schemes of red and black. The competition was fierce, as every logo was a work of art, carefully drawn to esthetically convey a conversation of ideas.
After a total of thirty designs were presented to the representatives of TEDx Roma, the top three were chosen to move forward for the creation stage of the brochure and poster:
Winner: Dmytro Krakhmalny
2nd place: Nika Vardanyan
3rd place: Elene Kavtaradze
The talent and hard work of these JCU students was officially recognized at the recent TEDx Roma pre-conference, when Prof. Giovanni Corazza spoke about “Exploriing the Unknown: Navigation as a Metaphor for Creative Thinking.”
