JCU Student Silvia Bezzi Develops Communication Material for University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Italy
“A commitment to excellence means producing your best work, and then challenging it to make it perfect.” – Silvia Bezzi
Last semester JCU Communications Major Silvia Bezzi created two brochures for UPMC Italy’s* Chianciano location. The work was a part of her Independent Study, supervised by Studio Art Professor Sabrina Schmidt. UPMC Italy is part of UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), the largest integrated global health enterprise in Pennsylvania, and one of the leading nonprofit health systems currently active in the U.S.
Where did the idea of this project come from?
I didn’t know much about graphic design when I started. My first course with Prof. Schmidt got me really interested in the subject, and I eventually signed up for her Advanced Graphic Design course as well. Prof. Schmidt works closely with the Institute for Entrepreneurship to identify real clients with design projects for the class. UPMC Chianciano, one of UPMC’s structures in Italy, became one of these clients. When Prof. Schmidt came to me with the idea of an Independent Study project for UPMC, I jumped at the chance.
What did the IS project consist of? What exactly did you do?
The Independent Study project that I worked on was for UPMC San Pietro FBF. They had just opened a new radiotherapy facility that revolutionizes the treatment of cancer, using the most advanced technology currently available in the market worldwide. I was in charge of the creation of two brochures, for Italian and foreign patients. I was given the text and the pictures. My job was to develop a creative artwork proposal in line with the existing graphic brand identity of UPMC.
What did you learn from this project?
It taught me how to commit to excellence. The lead of Prof. Schmidt was also an irreplaceable asset, as she considerably broadened my technical “know-how” of software and tools.
What was the biggest challenge for you?
The project required an in-depth approach to every aspect of the production of graphics, as well as a deep understanding of the relationship between a professional and the client. Hence, along with the extra work, came responsibility.
How would you describe your experience interacting with a real and prestigious client like UPMC?
I really appreciated working with such a great team. Despite being a prestigious organization, the UPMC team is truly committed to genuine care.
What is your final comment on the IS project?
I believe independent studies allow students to focus on narrow areas of expertise, while broadening the overall knowledge of the topic and getting hands-on experience. The final product is the result of a challenging and enriching opportunity. I am grateful to Professor Schmidt for her patience and ability to help me thrive under her skilled but humble guidance.
