JCU STAND Donates to Jordanian Civil Rights Organization

One of STAND’s donated blankets is distributed to refugees

In December 2016, John Cabot University’s chapter of STAND (Students Taking Action Now, Darfur) donated € 400 to Nashama Alwatan, a Jordanian civil rights organization. STAND President Omar Abdel Latif has been collaborating with the organization for many years.

With that budget, volunteers of Nashama Alwatan purchased and distributed 25 blankets and 10 heaters to the homeless refugees living in tents in the city of Amman. Winter is an unbearable time for these refugees, as temperatures often fall below -1°C/ 30°F at night. The donations were greatly appreciated and helped many survive hypothermia.

Created at at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. in 2004 to end the Darfur genocide, STAND’s aim has since expanded “to end and prevent genocide and mass atrocities wherever they may occur.” JCU’s chapter of STAND, specifically, aims to “provide individuals with a comprehensive understanding of the nature, limits, and characteristics of genocide.” Student volunteers also collaborate with the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center in Rome, where they distribute clothing, food and other necessities and teach English to refugees.

Students can purchase books or make a donation at the STAND book sale, which is taking place in the Student Clubs and Organizations Room in the Tiber Campus, through Thursday, January 19th.
