by Oleksandra Vereschak
On January 26-28, 2017 the John Cabot University Model United Nations Society hosted the seventh edition of JCU MUN Conference. It lasted for three days, gathering 102 students from 9 high schools. Pupils from the United States, Italy, Sweden, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Germany, India, Turkey, Israel, China, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Latvia, Pakistan, Mozambique, Slovakia, and Hungary came to JCU to debate on two topics of huge resonance and importance to the international community.
The first global issue, “Tackling Terrorism: Struggles to the International Funds Financing Terrorist Actors,” was prepared and chaired by JCU Alumnus Davide Orsitto, who is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Security Studies at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, and Leonardo Rivalenti, a JCU International Affairs student. The second topic, “Taking Effective Steps to Stop Climate Change,” was developed and moderated by the JCU MUN President Giuseppe Spatafora, a soon-to-be-graduate in International Affairs with double minor in Economics and History, and the Society’s Secretary Alejandra Palacios, a JCU freshman majoring in International Affairs and Business.
The Opening Ceremony was held in the prestigious auditorium of the Academia dei Lincei, thanks to the support of John Cabot University’s President Franco Pavoncello, who welcomed the delegates to JCU. Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Pamela Harris, the Society’s advisor, introduced them to the MUN world, while keynote speakers Dr. Francesca Galli and Dr. Doaa Abdel-Motaal shared their expertise on the topics accordingly. Mr. Filippo Rosin concluded the ceremony talking about his experience in UN peacekeeping missions. Some delegates said that they were inspired by the speakers to think about working with the UN in the future. The conference was coordinated by JCU MUN 2017 Organizer Oleksandra Vereschak, a senior majoring in Economics and Finance and Marketing.
The Society cordially thanks all the John Cabot University offices, faculty, and students who supported and assisted them throughout the conference preparation and, having had yet another successful event, is excited to start working on JCU MUN 2018!
