Carson McCullers in the World: International Conference at JCU
John Cabot University will host an international conference on the American novelist Carson McCullers from July 14 through 16, 2017.
The conference, co-sponsored by JCU, the Carson McCullers Society, and the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians will feature presentations by McCullers scholars from around the world as well as numerous performances by artists and an art exhibition of work inspired by McCullers’s life and work.
The conference will also feature two events that are open to the public. The first, which will take place on Friday, July 14, is the screening of the film Together by director Lorenza Mazzetti, who will also be present. The 1956 film is loosely based on The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers, and takes its title from the novel’s opening line. Register for the film.
On Saturday, July 15 JCU will host the European premiere of the short film, “A Tree. A Rock. A Cloud.” based on one of McCullers’s short stories, directed by the Hollywood actress Karen Allen. Allen, who will be present to discuss the film, is perhaps best known for her role as Marion Ravenwood in Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. Register for the film.
The conference’s host is JCU Professor Carlos Dews, an authority on the life and work of Carson McCullers and the editor of the recently published Collected Works of Carson McCullers (Library of America 2017).
