Professor Silvia Scarpa Presents Paper at Conferences Organized by the “Universities' Network for Children in Armed Conflicts”
JCU Professor Silvia Scarpa took part in the webinars on “Giving Hopes to Girl Children in Armed Conflict – A Joint Commitment from the Academic Community” held on November 16 and 20, 2020. The webinars were co-organized by the University of Perugia, La Sapienza University and the Institute of Political Studies S. Pio V in Rome, and were co-promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The two events were aimed at celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the adoption of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict. Professor Scarpa delivered her presentation during the roundtable on “Strengthening the judicial protection of girl children affected by armed conflicts” and she analyzed the international law standards in the field of child, early, and forced marriages of girls during armed conflicts.
The Network of Universities is aimed at raising awareness, promoting training opportunities, and favoring forms of research and cooperation among its members, so as to shed light on the plight of children in armed conflicts and to promote action. Members of the Network organized training activities at their respective universities in the week 16 – 20 November 2020. For this reason, Professor Scarpa included lessons on the recruitment of child soldiers, peace support operations and human trafficking, sexual abuses and sexual exploitation in the schedule of her PL/LAW 325 Human Trafficking and Contemporary Slavery Course.
Professor Scarpa will be teaching PL 212 “International Organizations” and PL/LAW 325 “Human Trafficking and Contemporary Slavery” in the Spring 2021 semester.
