The roundtable was led by Professor Francesco Lapenta, Director of the Institute of Future and Innovation Studies. The event was honored to have Professor Enrico Giovannini, former Italian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, who initiated the session with a compelling presentation based on the ASVIS UN Sustainability Goals Report.

The discussion brought together a diverse group of experts to explore the complex, interconnected challenges facing our world and their implications for achieving the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Against the backdrop of unprecedented geopolitical unrest, including the Russia-Ukraine war, the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, and the lingering effects of the pandemic, participants delved into how these crises are reshaping global cooperation and stability.

Key focus areas included:

  • The impact of geopolitical tensions on economic, social, and technological progress, particularly in the green economic sector.
  • Increasing risks associated with gender and digital divides, privacy issues, labor and child labor concerns, and AI development amid growing global tensions.
  • Social and economic ramifications of current crises, including how financial strains are influencing resource allocation for sustainable development.
  • The potential repercussions on efforts to combat poverty, ensure quality education, promote economic growth, and achieve gender equality as governments shift focus to conflict resolution.

The roundtable provided a significant platform for understanding the multifaceted nature of current global challenges and exploring viable pathways to steer the world back towards achieving the vital objectives set by the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

John Cabot University extends its gratitude to all participants who contributed their expertise to this important discussion:

Enrico Giovannini, Paolo Guerrieri, Tuan Nguyen, Franco Pavoncello, Fiamma Goretti, Giorgio Rutelli, Giorgio Bartolomucci, Vittorio Calaprice, Silvia Scarpa, Alfonso Giordano, Alina Sorgner, Gianluca Galletto, Francesco Lapenta, and Giuliana Salmaso.

This event exemplifies JCU’s commitment to fostering critical discussions on global issues and our Institute of Future and Innovation Studies’ role in shaping the discourse on sustainable development and global governance. We look forward to continuing this important dialogue in future events and contributing to the global effort towards achieving the UN 2030 Sustainability Goals.
