John Cabot University to Launch Major in Art and Design in Fall 2025
John Cabot University is pleased to announce the launch of a new Art and Design major starting in Fall 2025. This Bachelor of Arts program, grounded in the liberal arts tradition, will empower students to elevate their artistic practice, refine their critical thinking, and develop a versatile skill set tailored to today’s creative industries.
Study Art and Design in Rome
Rome’s rich history, ancient monuments, and thriving contemporary art scene provide an inspiring backdrop for students, making the city a living canvas. Students will create site-specific works and gain a profound cultural understanding while interning at museums, galleries, and design studios. These opportunities offer invaluable hands-on experience and help students establish industry connections to shape their future careers.
World-Class Faculty
Courses are led by internationally exhibiting artists, curators, and designers with interdisciplinary practices. These experienced professionals bring real-world insights into the classroom, offering mentorship that helps students build a robust professional network lasting well beyond graduation.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
Students will work in cutting-edge studio spaces designed for drawing, painting, graphic design, photography, textiles, and new media. These facilities support both traditional techniques—such as intaglio printmaking and darkroom photography—and modern technologies like laser cutting and digital embroidery. The new Guarini Center for the Arts, opening in Spring 2025, will feature expanded studios for printmaking, painting, photography, and design, along with spaces for artist talks and film screenings.
Customizable Degree
The program begins with foundational courses that build technical and conceptual skills in art and design. Students can then tailor their education by selecting from a variety of specialized electives that align with their interests and career aspirations. The degree’s flexibility ensures that graduates are prepared for the challenges of today’s creative industries. Additionally, students can enhance their studies by pursuing minors in fields like Business, Computer Science, Communication, or Psychology, further broadening their perspectives.
Career Opportunities
Graduates with a BA in Art and Design from JCU will be well-equipped for diverse careers in graphic design, art direction, curatorial work, and multimedia art. The program’s blend of practical experience and critical theory prepares students for roles in industries ranging from advertising to education and cultural institutions. For those interested in further studies, the program also lays the groundwork for advanced degrees, such as a Master of Fine Arts (MFA), leading to opportunities in academia, studio practice, or specialized artistic fields.
A Transformative Experience
Professor James Gardner, Chair of the Department of Art and Design, highlights the program’s impact: “John Cabot University’s new major in Art and Design is a transformative addition, offering students an exceptional opportunity to immerse themselves in Rome’s dynamic contemporary art scene and vibrant cultural community. This program combines rigorous liberal arts education with hands-on studio practice, fostering creative and critical thinkers ready to shape the future of art and design. With access to cutting-edge facilities, interdisciplinary faculty, and the city’s unparalleled resources—museums, galleries, and public spaces—students can create meaningful work in a global context. The major not only celebrates artistic innovation but also strengthens JCU’s role as a hub for cultural dialogue and engagement.”
