JCU Student Leaders Speak at 2025 Edition of EUCA Conference
From March 5 to March 8, 2025, three JCU students, Martina Atanasova, Skyla Katenga and Martina Oliveto, and Residence Director Marica Loffreda participated in the third edition of the Student Leadership Bootcamp, organized and hosted by the European University and College Association (EUCA) in Seville, Spain. This year’s conference gathered over 50 student leaders for three days of insightful discussions, skill building, and knowledgeable exchange of practices.

The JCU delegation was the only one to cover all major topics discussed at the conference – community building, mental health and sustainability in both student organizations and housing – demonstrating the depth and diversity of JCU’s student leadership.
Inclusive Practices in Student Associations

Skyla, as president of the Black African Student Association (BASA), led a conversation on fostering inclusive student communities. She highlighted the importance of representation, cultural awareness, and creating spaces where all voices are heard and valued.
Martina Atanasova, president of the Arab Student Association (ASA) and vice president of Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI), spoke about resonant and mindful leadership, emphasizing the unique challenges and strengths of women in leadership roles. She underlined the importance of collaborative community building with other universities, with the ultimate goal of creating a common legacy and a lasting, meaningful impact through workshops and projects. Martina shared strategies on how to empower students, create community through advocacy, and cultural and professional development, as well as foster supportive environments in student organizations.
Sustainability and Community Building in University Housing
Residence Director Marica Loffreda brought attention to sustainable living within student accommodations, discussing the role of leadership in implementing eco-friendly practices, reducing waste, and promoting conscious decision-making among residents. Martina Oliveto, as a Resident Assistant, provided insights into the responsibilities of student leaders in housing. She shared best practices on conflict resolution as well as how to create a sense of belonging and foster a supportive community within student residences.
This experience was a testament to the dedication and passion of all student leaders. As Martina Atanasova said, “It reinforced the idea that leadership is not just a title – it’s a mindset and a continuous responsibility.”
