Professor Walter Arrighetti on Cybersecurity in EU Cross-border Digital Services
Professor Walter Arrighetti recently published an article on Cybersecurity in EU cross-border digital services in the Italian journal Formiche (n. 147, May 2019). A blockchain is a growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked using cryptography in order to create a digital database containing information (such as records of financial transactions) that can be simultaneously used and shared within a large decentralized, publicly accessible network. Blockchain is the technology behind Bitcoin and other crypto-currencies.
Digital services rely on digital trust for them to be actually used by real people in order to automate real processes on sensitive data (like health, financial, etc.). Even services relying on blockchain and other “distributed-ledger technologies” ultimately rely on digital trust, not the least to trust that someone writing transactions or records in the blockchain is really the one he or she claims to be. In this sense, blockchain may be a decentralized technology allowing you to get rid of upper-level governance, yet there must be some technological cybersecurity embedded in the blockchain by design, for it to be really trusted.
Things like electronic signatures and electronic seals, as well as electronic identification (eID) schemes are well defined by Regulation (EU) N.910/2014 “eIDAS” in a way such that qualified electronic signatures and Europe-notified eID schemes are interoperable with each other and recognized at a cross-border level.
Professor Walter Arrighetti is an electronic engineer with a Ph.D. in electromagnetism. He is Lecturer in Cybersecurity at JCU, where he teaches MGT/CS 377 Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Management. He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), currently working for the Italian Government and for several media and entertainment companies. He specializes in Information Security, dematerialization/archival ICT technologies, and multimedia processing.
He also recently published the article “La sicurezza nelle Blockchain: aspetti chiave e valutazioni tecnologiche” (“Security in Blockchains: key aspects and technological evaluations”) in the e-magazine CyberSecurity360.
