Reshaping the World of Work: Internships in the Time of COVID-19
It is undeniable that the current global situation is reshaping the world of work: restrictions and quarantines are pushing companies towards the digitalization of all activities. Whether this change is the new normal, even after the crisis period, or not, remains to be seen.
In any case, notwithstanding the situation, many companies are still operating on a remote basis and offering internship opportunities all the same. Especially in these trying times, companies need to communicate to show everyone, clients, competitors and partners alike, that they are indeed still operational. Many organizations still push their agendas forward, with some obvious adjustments, because their audiences need them, now more than ever: news organizations, NGOs, E-commerce, online services platforms, etc.
The John Cabot University Center for Career Services is still offering its services to alumni and students. As a matter of fact, this shift towards digitalization does not come as a surprise: it has been undoubtedly been sped up by the circumstances, but the capability to operate entirely online or from remote, has been a rising trend in the last few years.
Prof. Antonella Salvatore, the Director of the Center for Career Services and Continuing Education, recently said, “Companies and organizations now need our students’ and graduates’ digital and technological skills, which in turn creates new opportunities in this field. Moreover, considering how independent one must be when working from remote, it is a great way to challenge one’s sense of responsibility and commitment to the work itself.”
It is also important to say that, Students who are interested in doing an internship for the work experience or for credit, can still apply through Career Services and start looking for a Summer or Fall opportunity, depending on their availability.
On April 21st, Prof. Antonella Salvatore will be holding a Zoom session on the steps required to obtain an internship and obtain academic credit. Please send an email to [email protected] for more details and to sign up.
