Triggering Change Selected as International SDG 2 Best Practice in Higher Education
Triggering Change was selected as an international best practice addressing Sustainable Development Goal 2 (zero hunger) in higher education. It was included in the volume Higher Education and SDG 2, published by Emerald Publishing in 2024.
This book presents cases drawn from research, teaching, and learning, as well as campus and community-based initiatives that focus on SDG 2 and address food security, nutrition, sustainable and resilient agriculture, and ending hunger for all. Examples are taken from Australia, Canada, China, Indonesia, Italy, Malawi, Northern Ireland, Peru, Turkey, the UK, the USA, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
The Triggering Change competition was inaugurated at John Cabot University in 2022, and since its creation has involved 430 students from 80 countries. The pitch aims at spurring students’ creative thinking on how to address SDG challenges. Two SDGs are chosen every semester, and participating students benefit from talks by international experts who share their success stories in addressing these challenges, from sessions on pitching techniques to ad hoc library resources. Winners receive a €100 Patagonia voucher. A Certificate in Sustainability is available to students who complete the pitch.
Universities are invited to join John Cabot students on an ad hoc basis. In Fall 2024, Oxford Brookes, Richmond University, and the University of Arkansas Rome Campus will participate in Triggering Change.
In Fall 2024, Triggering Change will focus on SDG 10 and SDG 12.
Higher Education and the Sustainable Development Goals is a series of 17 books that address each of the SDGs through the lens of higher education. Adopting a solutions-based approach, each book focuses on how higher education is advancing delivery of Agenda 2030. The series is edited by Wendy Purcell, Professor at Rutgers University and Academic Research Scholar at Harvard University; Emeritus Professor and University President Emerita.
