On April 29, the JCU Lady Gladiators took home the Roman Universities League championship trophy in a 5-4 victory over Foro Italico. The scorers were Sarah Velasquez (1), Olivia Whalen (3), and Emily Hegel (1).

This is the first time in tournament history that an American university team has won the championship. During the presentation of the trophy, Nicole Luvisotti was named Best Player of the 2015 tournament. Sarah Velasquez was also honored for scoring the most goals of any player in the tournament.

Marco Iorio, JCU’s Athletics Coordinator, was overcome with pride. He said, “After so much hard work, we finally achieved what few thought we could. We always believed, and these girls are excellent examples of how teamwork can pay off. A big thanks to the staff and especially to our team captain, Maria Martynovych. She represents the true spirit of JCU. We owe so much to you!”

JCU President Franco Pavoncello said, “It was an incredible, unforgettable game. I am sure the entire JCU community will join me in congratulating the Ladies who make us so proud.”
