JCU to Host Distinguished Literary Theorist Terry Eagleton

John Cabot University is privileged to host Terry Eagleton on Monday, October 24th at 8 p.m., when he will give a lecture entitled “The Death of Criticism?”.

Terry Eagleton is Britain’s most distinguished living literary theorist whose work has influenced generations of students and scholars. Author of more than forty books, including the well-known Literary Theory: An Introduction, Eagleton’s critical interests involve history, politics, religion, aesthetics, and ethics. He’s also composed a play, a film script, a novel, and a memoir. Eagleton was Thomas Warton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford (1992-2001), John Edward Taylor Professor of English Literature at the University of Manchester until 2008, and he is currently Distinguished Visiting Professor at the universities of Lancaster and Notre Dame. In 2008, he gave Yale University’s Dwight H. Terry Lectureship on “Faith and Fundamentalism: Is belief in Richard Dawkins necessary for salvation?” His Gifford Lecture, in 2010, was entitled “The God Debate,” and later that year he also delivered the Richard Price Memorial Lecture entitled “The New Atheism and the War on Terror.”
