"Decentering Native Privilege: Italy Reads, Writes, Pitches" at TESOL Italy's National Convention
Professors Silvia Pulino and Tara Keenan presented Italy Reads, Writes, and Pitches to the National TESOL convention in Rome at the Polo Didattico on November 19. The themes of the convention were “The privilege of the Non-native speaker” and “English in multicultural education.”
Their talk, entitled, “Decentering Native Privilege: Italy Reads, Writes, and Pitches,” written in collaboration with Gina Spinelli, explored how John Cabot University is attempting to tailor our multicultural approach to educating secondary school students through various English language contests and programs. They argued that through this multi-pronged approach to teaching the four essential modalities of language learning (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), John Cabot is expanding the rhetorical regime to include a diversity of voices while at the same time building critical communication skills among Italian high school students.
