Professor Tiziana Provvidera’s new book

John Cabot University Humanities Professor Tiziana Provvidera recently published Etica e politica in Giusto Lipsio: Aristotelismo, cristianesimo e antiumanesimo (Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici Press, Naples).

The book investigates sixteenth century Flemish philologist and humanist Justus Lipsius’s attempt to bridge the gap between ethics and politics in order to help the ruler to ensure social stability and prosperity to his kingdom. The themes dealt with are wide-ranging and entirely concern problems that are strictly philosophical and political: ways of governing, the power of the State and sovereignty, obedience of subjects, dissembling of princes, tyranny, the right to carry-on war, and religious tolerance. These issues touch upon the problems of the relationship between politics and morality, which distinguish the works of a great number of writers and philosophers of the ages to come.

Professor Provvidera is grateful to JCU’s Faculty Development Committee for helping to finance the publication of this book.

In Fall 2013 Professor Provvidera will be teaching HS/PH 223 Historical and Philosophical Aspects of the Italian Renaissance and PH 310 Magicians, Heretics, and Scientists in the Age of the Renaissance.
