JCU Wraps Up Student Leadership Training Week

Friday, September 4th, marked the end of the week-long Student Leadership Training sponsored and organized by Director of Student Services Pilar Murguia and Student Engagement Coordinator Julia del Papa. During the week, 74 student clubs leaders, orientation leaders, and resident assistants had the opportunity to reinforce their leadership skills by attending specialized workshops and team building activities.

The daylong event on Friday started with an introduction by Pilar Murguia and Julia del Papa to the “Student Leadership Challenge Model” developed by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Students learned one of the fundamental traits of a good leader: the importance of being credible, genuine, and competent in order to inspire others to act.

During the afternoon, students were invited to discuss their experiences as leaders of the JCU community, and took part in active learning team activities to test their skills.“The environment and energy of the workshops were really encouraging, which made it easy for all of us to give it our 110% and focus on becoming leaders,” said Jorge B. Flores, President of the Organization of Latin American Students.

The training session ended with a speech by President Franco Pavoncello, who shared his own experiences as leader of the university. Dr. Pavoncello stressed that a leader must possess honesty, transparency, ethical behavior, and above all, a dedication to his or her cause. He said, “JCU is a unique university in which students are taught to constantly think outside of the box, thanks to the international and multicultural exposure throughout their undergraduate careers.”

Leadership at John Cabot University is a fundamental process of the student learning experience outside the classrooms. All students are encouraged to join one of JCU’s student leadership programs: Orientation Leaders, Club Leaders or Resident Assistants.
