New York City

Each year during the Gala, John Cabot University honors those who have contributed to the University by demonstrating their commitment to education and by exemplifying the University’s mission. This year’s honorees are JCU Trustee, Mr. John Meditz, and Mr. Steve Menzies.

John Meditz graduated from Fairfield University with a BA in Economics and obtained an MBA from Rutgers University. He briefly taught Economics at William Paterson University, began working in the investment field at Manufacturer Hanover Trust, then as a V.P. and Senior Investment Officer with Bankers Trust Company (17 years) and co-founded Horizon Asset Management 25 years ago. Now Horizon Kinetics, LLC, the company manages approximately $6 Billion and is known for its ‘value’ orientation and its non-traditional research publications. For both his very long Board tenure and generosity to his alma mater, Fairfield University awarded John an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree in 2012 and more recently the President’s medal for similar reasons by Xavier High School.

Steve Menzies is Founder and Chairman of Applied Underwriters, Inc. a national Workers’ Compensation insurer providing coverage for US businesses’ employees’ safety and well-being. Applied is the only insurer in its field with an A+ rating, indicating the company’s performance, security, and stability, and is widely recognized for its exceptional care for injured workers. Applied is the largest landowner in Omaha, with its purchase of a 500-acre site where Boys’ Town once had its farm; the site is being developed to be a multi-faceted destination known as Heartwood Preserve that will also house a new campus for its 700 employees. Mr. Menzies is Vice Chairman of the San Francisco Opera where Applied is headquartered and where he resides.
