JCU Offers Free Online English Classes to Italian High Schools

During Italy’s lockdown, a new program organized by JCU provides free online English classes to Italian high schools.

All Italian schools and universities have had to switch to online classes as part of the country’s efforts to halt the spread of COVID-19. In order to help schools and teachers deal with the sudden need for online materials, JCU has decided to offer free English classes to Italian high schools.

Lessons, which are held exclusively in English, last from 30 minutes to an hour, and their main strength is that they are high quality and blend into the curriculum of Italian secondary schools as well as the needs of young adults who need to prepare themselves for the world of work.

The initiative started on March 12, the day after the Italian government ordered the closure of all schools and universities nationwide. Over 2000 students from various regions of Italy have already become involved in the project.

Since John Cabot University believes that being able to communicate effectively is one of the most important life skills to learn, the lessons are not aimed solely at improving grammar, but also at enhancing practical skills such as public speaking, writing persuasive essays, and creating press releases. Topics of discussion also include the changing job market and the importance of soft skills and how to highlight them in a resume.

These are all skills that will be extremely helpful to high school students who are preparing their oral exams for the Italian high school diploma, not to mention the university exams and job interviews they will face in the near future.

“The classes have given us an important opportunity to understand how to organize an essay and a persuasive speech. For example, we analyzed important speeches such as John F. Kennedy’s “Ich Bin Ein Berliner” and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream,” says Maria, who is in her fourth year in Rome’s Liceo Dante.

Taking part in the project is very simple. Interested high school teachers can send an email to [email protected] to receive further information or to apply for the program.
