Happy 100th Birthday to Beloved JCU Trustee Frank J. Guarini!

The Honorable Frank J. Guarini, Chair Emeritus of the JCU Board of Trustees and a distinguished figure in law, politics, and philanthropy, celebrated his 100th birthday on August 20, 2024. The celebration was attended by family, friends, dignitaries, and distinguished members of the JCU Board of Trustees. Jacqueline Falk Maggi, Senior Advisor to the President, represented John Cabot University at the event, sharing best wishes from the entire JCU community. The Chair of the Board of Trustees Salvatore Salibello presented him with a gold medal in recognition of his dedicated service and visionary leadership.

Born in 1924 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Guarini’s life has been defined by a steadfast dedication to public service and education. His remarkable journey includes earning degrees from Dartmouth College, Columbia University, and New York University School of Law, as well as pursuing advanced studies at The Hague Academy of International Law in the Netherlands. Guarini’s service during World War II was marked by bravery, earning him the Navy Commendation Medal and three Battle Stars. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career in law and politics, including serving two terms in the New Jersey State Senate and seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Frank J. Guarini’s influence has had a profound impact on John Cabot University, with his philanthropy and vision driving significant growth and development. Since joining the JCU Board of Trustees in 1995, Guarini served as Chair for many years and has been instrumental in shaping the University’s future. In 2005, he established the Guarini Institute for Public Affairs, fostering discourse on global issues, and in 2008, the University honored him by naming its historic Via della Lungara location the Frank J. Guarini Campus. His financial support has been transformative, including a $1 million pledge in 2014 to initiate the Columbus Guarini Scholarship, a $3 million donation in 2018 to renovate the Caroline Critelli Guarini Campus, and a $2.5 million gift that led to the establishment of the Frank J. Guarini School of Business, which achieved AACSB accreditation in 2022. John Cabot University’s MA program in International Affairs, to be launched in the Fall Semester of 2024, was also created thanks to a generous donation by Guarini. 

Guarini’s legacy at JCU is more than bricks and mortar; it is a lasting commitment to education and cultural enrichment. His contributions have extended beyond infrastructure, enhancing the University’s academic and cultural offerings. The Guarini Institute for Public Affairs provides a platform for critical discussions on transatlantic and global issues, while his recent $500,000 donation to establish the Frank J. Guarini Art Center highlights his dedication to fostering a vibrant academic environment. As Frank J. Guarini celebrates his centennial, his enduring impact on JCU and the broader educational community stands as a testament to a life devoted to service, learning, and the betterment of society.
