Last October, JCU participated in Frankenreads, a global celebration of the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. During the month-long event, students, faculty, and staff participated in the live read-a-thon and attended various Frankenstein-themed events. Frankenreads came to an end on Halloween night, with a lecture given by author Fiona Sampson.

On October 19, he spoke at the 7th Peripatetic Conference in Poland, while on October 31, he spoke at the "Interrelations Among Different Forms of Human Communication" workshop in Sweden.

Professor Silvia Scarpa was recently asked to do an independent evaluation of the implementation by Italy of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) Commitments in the field of human trafficking. The results were published in a report commissioned by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa.
